These baby birds don't need cages, because they can't fly.  Knitted nests are a perfect solution for these orphans, offering them  a very comfortable, warm and secure place.  Each baby bird could use 2 nests, because the nests get very dirty.  Each oprhan baby bird gets fed every 45 minutes, and the poop and food get all over.  So nests need to be changed frequently.  The dirty nests are not thrown away.  If the nest is made with acrylic or washable yarn, the nests are washed, set out to dry and made ready for the next baby bird family to use.

About me:   This is my 6th year knitting.  I am a middle school student trying to help out my community.  Knitting these nests combines my love of animals and knitting, two of my favorite things.  I have been knitting bird nests since 2012 and thought it was time I got others involved in it as well.  You can make a difference.   If you'd like to help by making one, two, or many nests, please see the Instruction tab.

If you are associated with a knitting group in the San Francisco North Bay and are interested in having someone demonstrate or give instruction on how to make a birds nest,  please contact us to make arrangements.

If you have some acrylic yarn or circular needles around that you are not using and that you would like to donate, please send them to us!  We will use them in our instructional sessions to help people learn to knit nests!  Please email us, or see our Contact Us page for our mailing address.
